We’re answering some of your frequently asked questions about our Lothantique products. From triple-milled soap versus French-milled soap, natural ingredients, environmental impact and more – you’ve got questions and we’ve got answers.
Is triple-milled soap the same thing as French-milled soap?
The short answer, yes! All traditional French-milled soap is triple-milled (although, not all triple-milled soap is made in France). In fact, it can take up to 20 days to make a pure bar of savon de Marseille. The soap is compressed multiple times (at least three) to remove air bubbles and create a quality, high-density product. This means your bar of soap will last much longer and won’t go mushy after a few uses. To learn more about traditional soap making in Provence, checking out our post ‘What is Savon de Marseille?’
Are your soaps biodegradable?
Our Lothantique liquid soaps are made from a vegetable formula, which is 95% biodegradable. Not to mention, any traditional savon de Marseille has to be made using vegetable oil to create a natural and pure product. We always prefer to work with natural and organic ingredients from local suppliers in France. For a full list of ingredients, please refer to the individual packaging on our products.
What is the difference between eau de parfum and eau de toilette?
The main difference between perfume and eau de toilette is the fragrance oil concentration. Eau de toilette has a lighter concentration for a more fresh and discreet fragrance. It is ideal for daily use. Eau de parfum will have a stronger or more intense fragrance. Due to the higher oil concentration, a perfume will last a little longer for a night out on the town. Likewise, our room sprays also have a higher concentration of oil to scent your space with a few simple sprays.
Do your products contain parabens?
No, our Lothantique cosmetic products are paraben-free. They do not contain PEG, silicone or phenoxyethanol.
Are your products eco-friendly?
At Lothantique, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact. Our product packaging can be recycled, and we use recycled paper. By carefully selecting natural and organic ingredients, products like our soaps are nearly 100% biodegradable. Our products are entirely produced in France (mostly in Provence) so we are able to work with local suppliers to reduce our carbon footprint. We also encourage our customers to buy our soap and fragrance diffuser refills to reduce waste (and save money).
Sustainability was a fundamental principle of our founder Joséphine Mouranchon, and it is a principle we take very seriously today.
Do you use animal testing?
No! Our Lothantique products are not tested on animals. We are proudly animal cruelty-free.
How long has Lothantique been in business?
Lothantique started in 1920 – making us over a hundred years old! We started out as the The Mouranchon Brothers in Chateauneuf Val Saint (near Lure mountain) founded by Joséphine Mouranchon and her brother, Nestor. Joséphine’s grandchildren, Denis and Dominique, relaunched the company in 1987 to carry on the family tradition. For more about our family history, please read ‘Meet Joséphine Mouranchon.’
